Problems downloading hiking project app

Want to give up on klunky adding trails function Dec 4, By Deborah-B. I really want this project to succeed. But every time I record a GPS track and try to add it as a trail, I run into a klunky, hard to use interface that makes me wonder why I bother. I record my track. Now to add it as a trail, I have to go to my profile Why? Then I get sent to the web interface, where map editing is impossible on a small screen. And why force me to edit the map? There are so many selections and descriptions to fill out after that.

And tonight I did a big edit, and it was all lost. Why should I bother? Make it easy to add a trail from the app not the website and make it reliable. Otherwise I might as well go donate my time to recording tracks for AllTrails instead. Sep 19, By don rhodes. I attempted to record hikes twice with this app and it failed both times. The second attempt had a beautiful map at the end.

I thought it saved, but alas the history shows a 0 mile hike. Offline maps? Sep 9, By Mammothx. I see no downloadable offline maps option, which is the core of what this app reports to be. Get on the bandwagon! The best you can do is pre-view the entire route at a decent zoom level before you go in order to cache the Gmap as much as possible, but the result is varying quality and is very limited.

Jul 26, By Justin S. One annoyance is almost every trail in the NYS forest preserve or the Northeast for that matter list dogs on leash. Therefore, it's virtually impossible for every trail to list dogs off leash and be accurate. No matter how many trails I correct or tickets I submit this goes unfixed. So 2 stars.

Maybe you'll fix it, maybe not. Up to you if you want accuracy. Why did you break my favorite app? Jul 5, By qrib. Why did you break something I was able to rely to on the trail? This new version is not reliable and can't be used on the trail anymore, will probably have to switch to Alltrails. Like I said not reliable anymore on the trail! This was so convenient to pin a trail planning my hike and during my hike to simply stay on the trail I'm on, now it's lost in my favorites, and have to sometime spend time looking for itwhile on the trail, what a waste of time The better is the enemy of the good, in other words, don't fix it if it's ain't broke.

The hiking project was my best reliable companion on the trail, I was happy to log new trails to be part of the community and help building the trails database, I will now have to use Alltrails. This is sadly not reliable anymore out there, fearing that the map get unusable and might crash trying to use it is not an option. Aug 8, By John Lamb.

I used this app on the trail yesterday for the first time. There is a loop I like to do but in the app this loop is 3 separate trails.

No way I could see to join them into a loop so as to get stats e. That's quasi-useful but what I really wish it would show is things like how far to the destination? How far have I come so far?

Somewhat disappointed. Nov 24, By Benjamin Beebe. Disappointing Jul 7, By Hvanett. The app is great if all your hikes include forest. All of the trails in the app near me are a alpine or b very popular and busy. The trails are just a fraction of what other websites and apps show close to me. While there are popular trails within a very short drive, they are not listed.

So if you live in a small town even one with a reputation for the outdoors and just want a few good places to spend a an hour or three, there are better apps out there. See all negative reviews. I opened it up as boom a couple of tiny barely visible trails, so after navigating about 5 trail junctions I got a glimmer of hope and saw the ocean small dot of blue.

Great Beta. Apr 30, By Hunter sage jasmen. I love the app. Works great with lots of trail beta. The downside. This past weekend on a trail I found people literally camped on the trail with fire ash within feet of water sources. For the developer. Very Helpful App Jun 28, By Fjavsjdjdbdbdbdbdhdjdjdbhd.

I love that this app gives routes to climbing many of the famous mountains and even combines them. Very easy to use, compared to my original method of merely researching the area on google maps. This app provides those and even at some points gave me my location on the trail. Highly recommend this app. Jul 20, By Tim M. Best hiking app - download the area then it uses satellite to locate your position. See all 5 reviews. Search not working? Jan 20, By smiggy Most everything about this app is amazing, and I still recommend it to my friends despite my one problem.

Once you find the trail on another app then it works but it should be all inclusive. It is a pain to have to sync up the two apps though. I will continue to use it but there are some major bugs that need to be fixed. Love the app but missing some key features! Aug 1, By Spence I love this app and think the Hiking Project is better as whole compared to other hiking apps but it is missing some key features that are available on the website which keep it from being the best.

I wish we could upload our trails, photos, or comments about hikes through the app since you are able to do these things in almost every other hiking app. Nov 28, By Josh Miller. I do love this app, and the MTN bike project one as well!! Super simple, but has pretty much all the trails I use, which is all I need.

The only thing I would really like to have as an option, is for users to submit campsite locations. I have a trail in GA that I like to overnight backpack, but using these maps, I have no idea where all the campsites are. Awesome, but Sep 7, By Epheumsirc. Very intuitive app to filter and find those, BUT many you need to be parachuted into the middle of the wilderness to get to!

Everest if someone just labeled a start and stop and gave it a name. Look forward to exploring. Meanwhile, all you young, fit folk can trek those easy hikes on your journey across the Appalachian Trail. Oct 7, By Steve Cutler. The App gives us confident in new hikes we take that we stay on the trail and where we are towards the destination. Still learning the App. Sep 30, By Michael Mares. Really cool app. I reccomend this for avid hikers and even people just going for a walk in the woods.

I've used this in Yellowstone as well as back in Indiana for those parks that don't always have the best paper maps available. Great app to find hikes Sep 9, By KittyPrawn. I can find hikes that are appropriate for my level and it gives me an idea of what to expect. I really wish there was a scale on the map view though. There have been times we wanted to make changes to a planned walk, but it was difficult to get the length of just one segment.

It always highlights a whole trail when maybe I just plan to go on some of it. Needs to catch up with the website Oct 23, By Utfisher. I really like this app but it lags far behind the website in terms of functionality.

Still, this has the potential to be the best of breed and I look forward to the release that incorporates all of the missing features. See all 4 reviews. Nov 15, By Betty Anne Shores. This app could be SO much better. Unlike on the website, there is no ability to filter trails. In addition, there is no "legend" so you are left to decide if something is a hiking trail or a ski run. I like how snappy the map painting is. I'm hard pressed to think what else I like. For now, I've got multiple apps.

Jul 29, By Balaji Ramanathan. This app is good because it has features such as offline maps that are usually found only in the premium version of other similar apps. But it lacks a few features that will make it much better. First, the search function is very poor.

It is difficult to gwt what you are looking for, and some trails seem to be entirely missing from this app. Second, the app forces you to download a region offline before you can do anything. Also should implement directions to trailheads. Hard to get set up Aug 4, By Smart Hiker. In a way I like the website better because the map and trail information are on the same page. AllTrails is probably better for an app. Nice maps, but no user content from phone Apr 18, By DavidW The app does provide some great maps with lots of useful information about trails.

You have to go home, go to the web site, and share your experience after the trip. Still not seeing this capability 8 months later. Nice app for finding trails Jun 15, By Coverbird.

I would not use this app to plan any hikes. The mileage is consistently off by a mile or more. When stringing trails together this can make for a trip that has the potential to be off by 2 miles or more. Do yourself a favor and get a paper map for your location and a guidebook. This is no substitute. Newest update was a step backwards Sep 16, By morgiemorgie. App is now not intuitive when trying to select the loop you want and is difficult to use to orient yourself.

Could be better Apr 3, In my opinion it would be convenient if you could search for the trails closest to your GPS location. But right now it seem you have to know what you are looking for and not so much able to discover new things. See all 3 reviews. Not easy enough to add trails or have comments Nov 19, Get the app. Help Center Select a Topic. Enabling location services allows the app to locate you on the map and to show you nearby trails.

How do I use the elevation profile feature in the Map View? By sliding your finger along the graph, you will see a pop-up on the trail that corresponds to the mileage, elevation and grade of that particular point on the trail.
